Grounded Social Media

Background

The Grounded Social Media for Learning project investigates a new form of education-oriented social media that is grounded in children's lived experiences. Even while social media has taken the world by storm, the phenomenon has not made much headway into the education field. Research in social media for learning has shown some success with the use of Twitter of Facebook in classrooms, but the specific design of social media platforms to support informal learning has received little attention. We focus on social media platforms to support informal science learning in this project.

Activity

  • We are currently investigating how students' personal stories of science may be integrated into elementary school science teachers' classroom teaching strategies.
  • We are also looking at how to design visual analytics interfaces to support teachers' in-situ teaching practice in the elementary school classroom.

Project Team Members

  • Brittany Garcia (Research Assistant, Psychology)
  • Stephen Spencer (Undergraduate student, Architecture)
  • Momore Adesanmi (Undergraduate student, Chemical Engineering)
